One setting in the novel is the city of Johannesburg (South Africa). Johannesburg is the city where Noah's mother moved when she took a job as a secretary. Because she was unable to rent, an apartment was secretly rented for her. This setting is significant because ir was Noah's mother's home during the time, in which, he was conceived. Sadly, Noah's mother, Patricia, is forced to hide him. The fact that she's had a child with a white man could lead to her arrest. Noah's father, who also wants to have a relationship with him, is able to spend time with him during his early childhood.
