Zmey
Zmey is Abe Mazur’s street name; though he is not Moroi royalty, he still has a powerful presence amongst the vampire world. Zmey directly translates to snake or dragon in Slavic literature. Indeed, this is a fitting name, and Zmey has his eyes on everyone and is razor sharp. Many fear his presence, much like that of a dragon.
Abe’s scarf
A simple scarf ends up being so much more. When Rose first meets Abe she notices his penchant for bold fashion and the scarf that is always around his neck. When he gifts it to her, she is touched that he would share such a beloved item to her. This all makes sense in the end when her mother tells her that the scarf is the same as one her father used to wear, which confirms why Abe had such an interest in Rose’s life and was keen for her safety.
Stake
The stake is used as a powerful weapon by Damphirs, but it also symbolizes so much more than just that. The stake is the difference between life and death and also good and evil. It is one of the few things that can kill a Strigoi. It is also infused with the magical properties of Moroi’s, which highlights its spiritual purpose in healing evil through death.
Dimitri’s Duster
This is a sentimental choice of wardrobe by Mead, as the reader has already learnt from previous books that Dimitri greatly enjoys his western novels and movies. It is startling to see such a human-like personality and choice of dress exists in the Strigoi Dimitri, when the reader probably had a vision of a blood-sucking haggard vampire taking his place.
