Antonio has a number of dreams throughout the novel. He dreams include of watching his own birth and his brothers screaming for his help. Anaya uses these dreams to develop Antonio's character. Antonio's worries about his destiny, family, and morality are often manifested in his reoccurring dreams. His dreams foreshadow everything that Antonio will in his mythic journey through life. The vivid dreams allow Antonio do develop the mythic structure of his life to which he attaches great importance.
