In Chapter Two, we learn that Black Elk's childhood was fraught with hardship. He addresses the tension between the Native Americans and the white settlers, who wanted to push their claims firther west. He talks about his father being wounded in the Battle of the Hundred Slain, the white man's greed and desire for gold, and his family's journey west, during which time, they struggled to find food and were challenged by the elements.
