What motivated aunt Addie to be so hard on her nephew?

Aunt Addie is an educator in a Christian school and deeply religious. She believes in discipline and proper behavior, in addition to morality. Unfortunately, after Richard threatens her for making a false accusation against him, she pretty much writes him off.
