How did Richard describe his father at the end of the chapter one

Richard, as an adult, now sees his father as old and toothless. Older, Richard pities and forgives his father. He sees his father as "a black peasant whose life had been hopelessly snarled in the city," the same city that provides Richard with success and knowledge later in life.
