Why is Beowulf Chosen Over Others To Be King?

Basically Beowulf becomes king because of his heroic exploits. He kicked Grendel's butt and supposedly took care of his mother as well. He also had a history of heroic exploits. After King Hygelac dies (both his sons die too) there is no obvious heir. Beowulf's resume fits the job description and he looks the part too!
