why grendel fear beowulf

I don't think it is clear if Grendel actually fears Beowulf. Grendel has been fighting, for many years, barehanded and weaponless. He does not fear warriors in general. Grendel, however, has heard the legends and talk of the brave Beowulf so he might have feared him a little.
