If you are going to address a single theme, my suggestion would be to focus on the theme of heroism. Heroism was seen as an identity, an accomplishment, a code of honor, and the mark of a great (good) warrior. Beowulf wanted to be a hero because it would define who he was as a person. In order to be a hero, he had to accomplish goals..... namely killing Grendel.... saving the Danes, making a name for himself, and then continuing on to become a "great" leader in his own country. He wasn't just heroic.... he was good, and he was fair. These are the things you need to focus on while writing your essay.
