Older and wiser than Beowulf, Hrothgar is responsible for the welfare of his people. It is his job to protect his people, provide a stable environment, and serve asa diplomat between his people and those of surrounding tribes.

Beowulf, on the other hand, is young, rash, and bent on achieving personal glory. He wants tomake a name for himself.... to be remembered for daring deeds and great feats. Beowulf does, however, become a great leader and very like Hrothgar when he becomes king of his own land.
