First, Stamp never knocks on doors..... he feels free to enter any of the homes of people he's helped. This is our first clue that something is wrong. The fact that he cannot bring himself to enters Sethe's home, or to knock on ger door, speaks to the guilt he carries for allowing the community's negative feelings toward Sethe to infect his own.
