War is the most pervading event in Agu's childhood. He is surrounded by death, destruction and chaos. To make matters worse, Agu is forced to participate in the war as a child soldier. Agu loses his innocence, is robbed of his childhood, and his forced participation in the heinous acts of war robs him of his belief in goodness. In the end, the loss of his faith creates a feeling of hopelessness. Agu, however, looks for redemption..... and though his belief in God has been destroyed, he knows that through becoming a doctor, he can reddem himself in his own eyes.
