Batman (1989 film) Imagery

Living Art

After the Joker breaks into the museum and destroys all of the artwork we watch as his lover appears and removes her mask to show her chemical scars. The Joker considers himself an artist and Burton uses this imagery of the woman's burnt face to show his lunacy in creation and how every act of violence he believes is instead enhances the human being and thus enhancing the city.

Target Locked

As Batman flies into the city in the Batwing, he acquires the Joker as his primary target. Burton uses a set of narrowing red circles to show that Batman is ready to break his rule of no killing as he unleashes missiles and high caliber bullets on his enemy, but misses. The imagery shows that though Batman is locked in on his target that even he cannot finish the job.

Purple Haze

Vickie Vale waits for Bruce Wayne at the museum as purple smoke billows from the vents. Burton uses the purple smoke effectively in the imagery to show that The Joker is taking over the city as the smoke prior to this scene has all been white. The imagery reveals that the villain is in every crevice of the city and infecting even the air people breathe.

TIME

When we are introduced to Vicki Vale we hear that she is a photographer. Burton shows a TIME Magazine cover photo of hers on the Corto Maltese Revolution. By seeing this image, Vale is given instant legitimacy by the audience as TIME is recognized as a leading high-level journalism magazine that thus is connected to Vicki.
