Bartleby is quiet and even tempered. He doesn't enjoy life and prefers to isolate himself from the world around him. Bartleby sees no point in living, and over the course of the story, he refuses to participate in normal living to the point that he even refuses to eat. By the end of the story, he has starved himself.
