Bad Haircut: Stories of the Seventies Irony

No longer his favorite

At the beginning of the story “The Wiener Man,” the narrator describes the obsession he had with a popular mascot in his town. The narrator was willing to do everything just to meet the mascot and his mother, knowing her son's passion, took him to a mall where the mascot was supposed to show up. The man in the mascot suit and the narrator's mother were old friends and they hugged when they saw one another. Ironically, at that moment, the narrator decided he no longer liked the mascot for the simple reason that the man in the suit and his mother had a past together.

Not going to betray you

In the story “Thirteen" the narrator describes how his friend Kevin used to steal money from his father and then buy sweets and clothes for himself and his friends. The narrator was the only one who knew where the money came from and he promised Kevin to always protect his secret. Ironically, however, the narrator is the one who tells Kevin's father the truth, thus betraying his friend.

I am not to blame

In “Race Riot” the narrator describes a series of unfortunate events which could have been avoided if only he had listened to his parents and return home before his curfew. Ironically, however, instead of taking responsibility for his action, the narrator blames his parents and sees them as the responsible ones for his transgressions.

Your son beat me up

Buddy is punched in the face by an older boy in the story “Snowman” and he decides he must get revenge. Buddy follows the boy who punched him to a house and thinking that it is the place where the boy lived, goes inside to talk with his mother. The woman calmly listens to Buddy and cleans his face before bringing in her son. Ironically, at that moment Buddy realizes that he got the wrong house when he sees that the woman's son was in a wheelchair.

Sleeping with him but agreeing to marry another

In “You Start to Live” Buddy loses his virginity to a girl named Laura. He and the girl are classmates and Laura is also in a relationship with another boy. After the two are done having sexual intercourse, Buddy thinks about how he would like to start a serious relationship with Laura and even starts to think about how their life will look like if they were to be together. Ironically, the next day Laura tells Buddy that she is pregnant and she must return to her former partner since the child is his.
