Phileas Fogg was English, wealthy, and had no family. He lived alone in London for many years without leaving. For enjoyment, he read books and played whist, donating all of his winning from the latter to charity. He dined at his club, alone, and returned home each evening at midnight. No one visited his house on Seville Road. All in all, he was considered an eccentric.
