Why might spending time in the forest help Stacey cope better with the truth concerning to T.J. ?

Stacey fled to the shelter in the forest after he knew that T.J. Is going to die. Does the forest have any meaning to him? Or does it have any memories of him with T.J.

I assume this question is referring to the novel, "Role Thunder Hear my Cry"?The forest was simply a shelter. It allows some cover to decide what to do. I don't think there is anymore particular meaning.
