Georgetown Activity Essay

Discuss the significance to you of the school or summer activity in which you have been most involved.


The screech of my alarm heralds a new day. As darkness melts into cobalt streaks over the Oniru neighbourhood of Lagos, Nigeria, I prepare breakfast for my younger relatives. By dawn, I'm on the bus hurtling towards the red-brick compound of Lagoon Secondary School, my Alma Mater. On the days I'm not compiling a journal to help students understand difficult concepts in Mechanics, I volunteer as a science teacher at this community-led high school. It is here that I decided that experiential learning combined with social responsibility could make the societies we live in better and more sustainable.

I am motivated by a fundamental desire to help others grasp the practical applications of mathematical and scientific principles. In order to bring classroom concepts in Physics to life, I use scrap materials to conduct experiments which call for equipment we lack. "What if?" I encourage my students to predict the outcomes of scenarios which can not be found in their textbooks. Slowly, these strategies have transformed their perception of Physics from an elitist subject to an essence they literally embody with every movement.
