8. Are there any ironies to Connie’s decision to go with Arnold Friend at the end of the story? To what extent can her surrender be seen as a heroic act?

On the day Arnold comes calling, Connie has managed to avoid a family outing and is home dreaming about boys and relationships. Ironically, it's Arnold who shows up at the door in a similar way to that of a young man arriving to take out his girl, and he is definitely NOT what she's been daydreaming about; he's a nightmare.

Connie's decision to leave with Arnold is seen by many as an act of heroism. She complies with Arnold's demands to save her family and gives up her own life for the people she loves.
