Why do does Riva feel "walls are closing in" on her in 1942? Who is she especially worried about?

She felt the walls were closing in because the Nazis were in the ghetto, and they were removing the sick, the old, and the children from their homes. Rive is especially worried about Laibele who has tuberculosis.
