During the early Paleozoic era the southern landmass of Gondwana encompassed South America, Australia, Africa, India, Antarctica, and possibly China. North America was not a part of this landmass. There were no plants or animals at this time, mountains were beginning to form, and all life was limited to the sea. Late in this early period (if that makes sense), animals with hard shells began to appear. These hard parts allowed movement to different environments.
