Hey Greta, I love "The Things THey Carried" and especially this story. I could almost feel this guys pain. I think Tim felt defeated, he had to go to war. He could not stand the loss of his past, his identity. Going to Canada would destroy him emotionally. Going to Vietnam might merely kill him. I understood his decision.
