From the ones I saw I think The photo "Rose of Sharon" feeding a starving baby depicts the essence of the struggle. All these people wanted was to eat. The breastfeeding under filthy and starving conditions summed things up for me. This image is especially poignant as Rose of Sharon gives up her milk, after her baby dies, to the old man in the story.
