What do you think would have happened if Melba had run away with Link?

This would have been tough on both the white boy and Melba. Link had to be very careful not to implicate himself too much with Melba's escape. The tensions would have spilled over into both Melba's and Link's families. Also insinuations of an interracial relationship would have been even more explosive than the initial segregation conflict.
