Antigone

antigone

Read the excerpt below from Antigone by Sophocles and complete the instruction that follows.

CREON:
I’ll take her on a path no people use,
and hide her in a cavern in the rocks,
while still alive. I’ll set out provisions,
as much as piety requires, to make sure
the city is not totally corrupted.

Explain Creon’s new plan for Antigone’s punishment and infer the cause of the change.

Instead of having Antigone stoned to death, he will have her locked in a tomb. He will give her just enough food to appease the gods but she will eventually starve to death. Creon does this to avoid an uprising of his subjects.
