An anthem is a song of celebration or religion. Throughout the novel, Equality writes his own, as he finds his freedom, his mate, and his home. His anthem.....

For the coming of that day I shall fight, I and my sons and my chosen friends. For the freedom of man. For his rights. For his life. For his honor.

I believe Rand chose this title to encapsulate her purpose in writing the novel.
