Why Equality’s Primary Motivation is the Right Motivation, and Why Everyone Should Be Motivated as He is 9th Grade

"To express yourself needs reason, but expressing yourself is the reason." These words of Ai Weiwei perfectly describe how the character Equality feels in the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand. Equality searches for a reason, an excuse, a chance, to express himself without realizing until toward the end that he is the reason himself. Anthem is a dystopian fiction novel by Ayn Rand. It takes place in some unspecified future date through the eyes of the main character, Equality 7-2521. Equality is just trying to find himself in this seemingly uniform and basic world. In the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand, Equality's motivation is to express himself, and it is right for him to have this motivation, and if everyone thought this way it would better the world.


Firstly, Equality 7-2521's primary motivation is to be able to express himself. As expressed by Equality 7-2521, "And in our heart- strange are the ways of evil!- in our heart is the first peace we have known in twenty years" (Rand 37). Notably, it is evident that Equality has found his calling. He's been has been striving to find happiness and he's acknowledging that he is happy.
