Annie's view of her life in Antigua changes over the course of the novel. As a child, she saw her life as idyllic, living in the perfect place and protected by her mother. As time goes on, her mother can no longer protect her from life, and as a result, she exposes Annie to death. Over time, war sets in.... and changes everything. Annie's relationship with her mother has changed, as has her relationship with her father. Annie grows up, and she realizes that the changes were inevitable, in addition to the fact that leaving is the only way she can truly become her own woman.
