if annie loves sonia, why does she feel compelled to make her suffer?

Oddly enough, Annie feels that Sonia's loss (her mother dies) and consequent motherlessness make her shameful; she stops talking to her for this reason. It doesn't make much sense, but we have to remember that Annie is only ten.
