Why is the follow sentence from paragraph 2 in chapter 7 ironic?

Quote: "Out of spite, the human beings pretended not to.believe that it was Snowball who had destroyed the windmill."

Why is this ironic?

This is Ironic because Snowball did not really destroy it even though the humans, in their hearts, brelieved Napoleon's lies.
