why do the animals confessed to being traitors?

We are never actually told in the book but we can safely say that they were forced to. Stalin, guy Napoleon was based on, did the same things. Under torture, people confessed to anything. Napoleon had his dogs that scared the hell out of the other animals. Confession would seem a better option than facing torture.
