What was Snowball's part in the fight?

Snowball and some of the other animals anticipated that Jones and his men might try to re-take the farm. Snowball, being an intellectual, has studied books on Julius Caesar's battle tactics. Snowball organizes all the animals for the epic battle of the cowshed. Like a General, Snowball orchestrates the defence of the farm. Snowball even charges Farmer Jones himself. A bullet grazes him but is not fatal. The farm animals are victorious.
