In Chapter Two, why must ribbons be destroyed?

Teacher didnt give me a copy of the book so i cant really go back to the book and look

Snowball says that ribbons must be destroyed because they are a symbol or badge of slavery.

"Comrade," said Snowball, "those ribbons that you are so devoted to are the badge of slavery. Can you not understand that liberty is worth more than ribbons?"
