From whose perspective is Animal Farm told?Why would Orwell have chosen such perspective?

The story is told in third person, impersonal/ omniscient point of view. I think Orwell wanted the narrator to be detached as if he were relating a historical text as to give a sense of authenticity to his "animal" story.
