The animals are initially motivated by a sense of camaraderie as they pursue the goal that Old Major wants them to pursue to rid themselves of the tyranny of Jones. Later, they become more individuals and want their own goals rather than the group goals. Because some are good animals (e.g., Boxer), they continue to do good things. Some, however, like Napoleon are full of self-interest and become more dictatorial than Jones had formerly been.
