why do mam andd dad refer to the downstairs of thier dwelling on roden lane as ireland and the upstairs as italy

The downstairs has suffered from a torrential downpour of rain, and there is water everywhere. Mam and Dad move all their belongings upstairs and tell the children to pretend their on holiday in Italy. The fire is roaring and everyone is dry..... they go back downstairs to Ireland in the spring.
