What makes this book so universal?

What is it about this story that made it so vastly popular, with over 4 million copies printed in 35 languages?

It has fairly universal themes that make it approachable. The difficulty of his youth is particularly universal, especially the starvation and drinking. Plus he's Irish; everyone likes the Irish.

That is a totally lame question! Angela's Ashes is just a great book!
