if there was another chapter what would have happened?

I've always felt that Armstrong could have been left alive to wander. We know it's believed that he was crazy and had committed suicide, but we also know that his body had been placed where it was discovered. What if the body had been left and later disappeared? What if Armstrong was the killer? Just a thought.
