why does Mr Birling go on about the port?

While Birling is pouring the port, he makes mention of the fact that it is the same port Gerald’s father buys. Gerald's parents, Sir George and Lady Croft, are above the Birlings socially. Mr. Birling is aware of this fact, so he makes the comment about the port.
