Basically Mrs. Birling is a big snob. Priestly has Mrs Birling to repeat the fact that she has no shame or guilt many times over. She is a hypocrite who not only lies in the story but lies to herself. She maintains that it is the “father of the child who is responsible” yet she seeks to protect her son who drove the poor girl to suicide.
