Why do you think Violet buries the iron kettle full of coins?

Violet does not want Amos to use their savings to purchase a home for Lois. She believes that the money needs to secure the future of their family. Violet also sees Lois as a woman who refuses to take on extra responsibility in order to take care of her children... Violet seems to be happiest allowing everyone else to take care of them through charity.
