From the text:

The comfort of a big house and the companionship of many servants and slaves had been her environment for years past. But she dared not think back on that too longingly. To be with Amos wherever his life might lead him was where her heart would have her. So it was with full confidence in him and undivided affection that she climbed up beside him on the seat of the cart and started over the road to Jaffrey on an April morning.

Amos and Violet slept under the stars while peepers chimed in a marsh nearby and late birds called to each other. They were free. They were starting life anew. They were being helped to get going and the people in the land to which they had come were showing gladness at their arrival.
