During the past year Amos had ridden over more than once to survey the lay of the land-the brook large enough to allow him to excavate basins for his tanning operations; the cleared fields where he could cultivate enough for their frugal needs, and the woodland from which he could get his tan- bark and cord wood for the winter. So pleased was he on his last visit that he felt ready to offer William Turner the sum of money that would make the place his. But after the evening with Lois Burdoo Amos had begun to think differently.
