Luke's dream is to move freely and live his own life. He is, none-the-less, an obedient son. Luke spends a great deal of time in hiding, he follows his parents' instructions and stays hidden..... for a long time. As he matures, however, his need to be out in the fresh air.... in the world of the living, overcomes all else. He doesn't vindictively disobey his parents, he does so out of teenage rebellion, something every teenager goes through. Luke's foray into the open is done with forethought and care. He isn't impetuous, he is cautious. In the end, it is the things he chooses not to do, rather than the things he chooses to do, that allow him to live and give him optimism for the future.
