American Rust Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

The symbolism of corruption

Corruption in the justice system is symbolized by the unprofessional police officer who helps Billy hide the evidence from the scene of the murder. The policeman destroys the evidence that is crucial in convicting Isaac and Billy for their involvement in the death of the mad man. Despite the arrest of Billy, the case is later terminated due to lack of evidence, and Isaac manages to go scot-free.

The symbolism of jealousy

The author figuratively uses the character Isaac, to represent jealousy. Isaac is not happy with his sister's opportunities of adventuring the outside world. Therefore, Isaac makes a weird decision to steal his disabled father's money to go outside town to explore new places. Consequently, Isaac is a jealousy individual who is focused on selfish interests while disregarding the well-being of his disabled father.

Prison Guards

The correctional officers symbolize irresponsibility at work. The role of the correctional officers is to protect the inmates from physical harm and bullying. However, Billy is physically abused and stabbed in front of guards who do nothing but watch. Billy gets stabbed severally, and he becomes disabled.

The symbolism of natural justice

Prison serves as an emblem of natural justice. Since there is no adequate evidence to sentence Billy, his jail term is shortened. However, before Billy is released, he gets instant justice from fellow inmates who beat him thoroughly until he becomes disabled. Billy’s stabbing reminds him of the pain he subjected the mad man to before he died.
