Zitkala-Sa is the narrator in “American Indian Stories”. The chronological stories recount the goings-on in her life starting with her childhood.
Zitkala-Sa’s Mother - “Mother” and “The Legends” and “The Beadworks”
She is down-cast woman who does her best to hide her sorrow from the view of her daughter. She inaudibly grieves the deaths of her family that includes Zitkala- Sa’s uncle, her daughter and her spouse. In “the Beadworks” Zitkala-Sa’s mother educates Zitkala-Sa how to develop authentic motifs for beadworks.
Zitkala-Sa’s Sister - “Mother”
She passed away and was buried “ in a hill”. Zitkala-Sa’s mother blames the paleface for her death.
Zitkala-Sa’s Uncle - “Mother” and “The Legends”
He is deceased too and died after Zitkala-Sa’s sister. In “Legends” the uncle is revered as a legend by old men, young men and young women due to the superlative chivalry of his engagements.
Warca-Ziwin - “Mother”
She is Zitkala-Sa’s seventeen year-old cousin who assists her mother with fetching water. She is Zitkala-Sa’s role model.
