American Dirt Summary

The story begins with Lydia Quixano Pérez saves her son Luca from a massacre that wipes out her family in Mexico. The hit was organized by drug kingpin, Javier Crespo Fuentes, who was angry at Lydia’s husband writing an exposé on Javier. This reporting resulted in his daughter, Marta, committing suicide when she found out about her father.

As such, Lydia and her son go on the run to become illegal immigrants into the US. El Chacal, a coyote, arranges for the group to cross the border, but Lydia does not have enough money. On their trek, the group is faced with a US Border Patrol drone, armed vigilantes, bad weather conditions. However, they manage to make it to the US where Lydia, Luca, Soledad and Rebeca live together.
