Having returned to the front early, the men find themselves with nothing to do except wait.  The word Chance, with the capital letter, refers to the idea that their next moves will not be of their own making.  They will just have to wait and see what happens.  The capital letter actually personifies an idea and shows that Chance functions almost like a person, having some control as people are supposed to have control.

Everything on the field depends on chance. Chance is the only reason a soldier lives or dies in war: chance means everything.
