why does Detering desert ?

Detering is a farmer. He can't stand being away from the farm. He can't stand hearing the wail of injured horses dying so unnaturally on the battle field. Detering basically snaps and goes AWOL. He really isn't thinking straight because he is easily picked up soon after.
