Who was Joseph Behm, and what happened to him ?

Joseph is the the first of Paul’s classmates to die in the war. Behm did not want to enlist, but he submitted under the pressure of the pushy schoolmaster, Kantorek. Joseph dies a slow and painful death in the military field hospital. This death shatters any belief in what their teacher had preached about the war.

Oops. Joseph died when he is blinded in no man's land and believed to be dead by his friends. The next day, when he is seen walking blindly around no-man's-land, it is discovered that he was only unconscious. However, he is killed before he can be rescued.
